Strawberry 'Big Sweetie'
There are some plants that just evoke pleasant memories and images. Of all them Strawberries has to be one of the most evocative. Strawberries and Cream, Strawberries in champagne, Strawberries marinated in liqueur or just plain Strawberries on a hot summer’s day all get the taste buds humming. Problem is over the years we have been exposed to poor quality, low flavour and low juice fruit from the supermarket. Fruit that has been ripened in the punnet and then cool stored.
Big Sweetie is a variety that was selected by Strawberry Australia as: “…very close to the perfect variety for consumers according to taste panels. Highly rated for the best combination of taste, juiciness, aroma and appearance. This bright red fruit is moderately glossy, extremely large and has a good low acid sweet flavour.” Try it yourself and you will find it is the juiciest, sweetest strawberry around.
Plant about 40cm apart in well drained but moist soil in full sun. The crown of the plant must not buried too deep. Surround plants with a good mulch to keep berrires from sitting on the soil. Remove and runners to encourage extra fruiting then cut back by 60% in late autumn. Regular applications of Seasol and PowerFeed are a must from spring to autumn. Strawberries are best eaten at room temperature and not straight from the fridge. They also go very well with a chilled white wine that can come straight from the fridge.
